Serving the Valley for over 36 years.

Weslaco City History

The City of Weslaco was founded on the principal “a Slice of the  Good Life”, and its city founders have been meeting that challenge ever since.

After the railroad extended its lines to south Texas in 1904, Mr. W.E. Stewart of Tyler, Texas, bought a large land tract near Llano Grande Lake.  The name Weslaco is an acronym for Stewart’s land company, W.E. Stewart   Land Company – Weslaco.  Stewart wanted a warm weather retreat where he could establish a private club.

In 1919 a group of men led by Ed Couch and brother in law, R.L. Reeves, purchased 320 acres of  The West Tract subdivision from   Mr. Stewart for   $250,000.  By December of 1919 they held an all   day auction to sell lots hanging from $50 to $400 for  residential and business lots.  The developers gave away three cars during that sale to attract settlers to the area. Weslaco developed rapidly after that sale.  The founders showed foresight by reserving land  for churches, parks, schools, and the City Hall. Today the City of Weslaco is a more organized, planned environment thanks to this foresight.
